Are you an entrepreneur (in the making)?

Guten Tag you savvy and playful legend...

Four out of ten employees in the western world are a part of the GIG economy. From side-hustles to straight up contract and consulting work, if you're not one of them now in the next twenty years, you probably will be. 

There are heaps of advantages (and disadvantages) about working in the gig economy. If you're a creative (like me) and haven't taken the plunge into working for yourself, then you've probably flirted with the idea a few hundred times over the last few months if not the last few days.

The entrepreneurial upside is pretty obvious:

  • Flexible work hours

  • Less structure

  • No fixed ceiling on what you can earn

  • Being your own boss

  • The thrill of developing, selling, and delivering your own ideas

The downside:

  • Prioritizing your time effectively

  • Lack of structure

  • No fixed basement on what you can earn

  • Having to be your own boss

  • The difficulty of developing, selling, and delivering your own ideas

You get my point. 

The entrepreneurial thing is not for everyone. From my own research, only about 20% of you reading this are cut out to forge your own path. And, yet, 20% more of you are putting a toe in the water. And that number is growing. 

Smart? Maybe.
Difficult? Definitely.
Impossible? No.

So what do you need to know in order to have a snowball's chance in H-e-double-hockey-sticks of making it out there on your own?

For starters, you'd better know who you are and how you can add the most value. At the end of the day, you get paid based on the value you add. Then there's what to charge. How to negotiate. And, a million other things to consider which you can't just Google.

Which leads me to the second thing you must be crystal clear on...how to monetize your skill-set. If you don't have a game plan for getting paid, you will get played. I'm talking about more than time management. There's forecasting, selling, retainers, dealing with difficult customers, etc.

You also better have a team of people (fellow side-hustlers) who can help you in a pinch. Because you'll need them, and they'll need you. And, I guarantee you'll be in more than one less-than-desirable situation where the only thing that will save you is a bit of outside help.

Without giving everything I know away for free, I'll leave you with a fourth consideration...you need to absolutely be clear about your calling. If you don't know what yours is, well, amigo, then don't lace your sneakers up. At least, not until you've done the internal work you need to do first.
