G'day you resilient and beautiful legend...
Simple fact: You are not your past.
Yes, your decisions (both good and bad) brought you to this point in your life.
Yes, your environment impacted you.
Yes, your family, friends and other significant relationships shaped you into the person you are today.
But, you're not your past. You're not even the same person you were 15-minutes ago.
So stop trying to play a part. Or live up to someone else's expectation.
Be yourself. And, strive to become a little bit better today than you were yesterday.
I love a few things Bill Murray had to say on this very topic:
"The more relaxed you are, the better you are at everything--the better you are with your loved ones, the better you are with enemies, the better you are at your job, the better you are with yourself."
"This is not a dress rehearsal; this is your life."
"If you can consciously let yourself get taken and see where you go, that's an exercise. That's discipline. To follow the scent. Let yourself go and see what happens, that takes a bit of courage."
"The secret is to have a sense of yourself, your real self, your unique self."
"The last time doesn't exist. It's only this time. And everything is going to be different this time. There's only now."
"You gotta commit. You've gotta go out there and improvise and you've gotta be completely unafraid to die. You've got to be able to take a chance to die. And you have to die lots. You have to die all the time."
So no matter what's gone down in your life so far - the last decade, the last year, the last month, the last 24-hours - you are not your past.
You are who you are at this very moment. Alive. And, free to choose.
So choose the good, amigo. Define yourself by who you are at your best, not your worst. And, keep going.
Here's to creating a better future - a better you...
