Steverino's favourite alcoholic ex-priest pen pal...

G'day my soulful amigo...

I'd like to share a bit of wisdom from a pen-pal of mine who just happened to be excommunicated from the Catholic church for falling in love with a beautiful lady...

His name is Brennan, and he is no longer with us (at least not in physical form).

Way back in my college days I was handed his best-selling book, The Ragamuffin Gospel. Basically, his version of the 12-steps rewritten through his own story. Turns out he had a bit of a problem with the drink as well. I found the book intriguing and ended up writing to him (Yes, I am that old...email was not really on the scene yet...plus who doesn't like getting mail?).

I was at a crossroads, about to graduate, and not sure of what I should do next. Surprisingly he wrote me back.

In his penned response to me, he shared a quote from Thoreau...

'If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears the beat of a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however, measured or far away.'

I framed that letter (It's in a storage unit with a bunch of fancy chairs I own). But, I also stored his wisdom up in my heart.

I return to it time and again whenever I experience self-doubt.

You see my friend, I think all of us deep down question if we're gonna be alright...

If it's okay to be different...

To really be comfortable in your own skin...

And, to risk sharing who you are and what you think with another human being.

If you're like me, fear of rejection can cripple your future.

It can freeze you in your tracks.

But, the good news is that the music you hear is probably calling you to something different...

More specifically, to be someone different.

Better...

And, it really is okay to trust what you hear and set out in that direction. I promise the journey will be worth it.

At the very least, you'll come back with a great story to share with the rest of us.

And, we need good stories as much as we need oxygen. Both give us life...

Here's to wise pen-pals...

It's meant to be shared, so if you buy one, I'll throw one in for free for one of your amigos.
