Steverino: What my 75-Years-Young Welsh Trainer Taught Me About Life

KONNICHIWA you talented fool...

Three and a half years ago I joined a local fight gym.

It's the kind of place where you want to make sure your tetanus shot is up to date.

What attracted me to the place was a cranky and loveable Welsh-rugby-legend named Swansea.

He's your typical no-bull-shit type of old cuss...

Always greeting me with:

"Go home Yank!"

Over the years we've built a friendship...

He gives me a hard time and I love him for it.

Anyways, turns out the man is filled with more than just piss and vinegar...

He has quite a bit of wisdom stored up in that generous heart of his...

Take for example some of his more famous and memorable phrases:

"If you cheat in the gym you cheat in life."

"Leave your excuses in your back pocket."

And,

"Stop talking and do the work."

Why am I sharing a 75-year-old's words of wisdom with you?

Well, two reasons to be exact:

1. We need elders in our lives.
2. And, there's a wisdom shortage in the world today.

On the topic of elders...

Throughout history, every civilization that marginalized its older generation ended up destroying itself within a few generations.

We should take pause here.

And, on the topic of wisdom...

Wisdom is the ability to live life skillfully (that's what the word literally means)...

A loose translation of Ian Morgan Cron's quote about elders and the need for their wisdom:

"(We)... need to be shown how to be in the world...to be given swagger, taught how to read a map so that we can recognize the roads that lead to life and the paths that lead to death, how to know what love requires, and where to find steel in the heart when life makes demands on us that are greater than we think we can endure.”

Anyways, I've been thinking a lot about this lately...

Wisdom and elders, that is...

Here's to older and wiser voices in our lives...

PS. If you're looking for a mentor (don't worry, it's not me), hit me up...

It's all a part of my secret mission I mentioned a few weeks back.

I have a few ideas on how we can change the game together.

Oh, and don't forget to share this with 2 people who need a bit of encouragement.
